Rent Or Buy Your Furniture?

Author: Wendy Waid

Now that you have your apartment and you moved in your old worn-out bed and your two makeshift stools, you decide that you really need more furniture, newer furniture. But should you buy it? Should you invest thousands of your hard-earned dollars into a new living room sofa set with the matching pillows? Or should you rent your furniture until you move into something more permanent?

Deciding to rent depends on how long you plan to stay at your current residence. If you signed a one-year lease and plan on moving into another apartment at the end of your lease, renting may be the best option for you. If you travel a lot or move a lot, you may not want to drag around a bunch of furniture all the time. However, if you like the idea of brand-new furniture that is all yours or if you plan on staying for a few years in one location, then buying is the better deal.

Always keep in mind the hassle of moving your furniture. If you rent your pieces, the company collects the furniture once you terminate the rental lease. If you own the furniture, you have to move all of it yourself. If you plan on moving several thousand miles away, you definitely don't want to pay the exorbitant amount to have all that furniture moved. Renting offers convenience and ease. Renting can be both a great deal and an expensive deal. Let's take an example. You see a nice leather couch that would cost $1500 at your local retailer. They even offer to have it delivered for only $20 more. But, you find a similar couch at the rental shop for only $25 a month with free delivery and pick up. The first year you would have paid $1520 plus tax but you now own the couch and would not need to pay anything else for it except moving costs. But, by renting the couch, you only pay $300 a year. It would take five years of renting to equal the cost of purchasing. And by the end of the fifth year, you would want a new couch anyway.

But this is only on one piece of furniture. Now, let's say that retail store offers a discount on multiple pieces purchased and you can get an entire room of furniture (5 pieces) for only $2000 plus $20 and tax. And you can rent each piece for $25 for a yearly fee of $1500. Now you can see that renting would not be so cheap.

However, renting offers the ability to change furniture as your tastes change or as the size of your rooms change. If you decide to move into a bigger or smaller apartment, that decision may affect your current room settings. You could sell your purchased pieces, but of course you won't get as much as you paid. Most companies also offer "option to buy" plans, which allows a rental customer to purchase the pieces being rented. Often they will discount the purchase price by the amount you've already put into rental or a large percentage of it.
